To held dyeing and finishing plants decolorize and purify mill watewater, researchers designed a series of chemical and mechanical unit operations to recycle water and salt and eliminate color and heavy metals discharge. The system uses Fenton's reagent, which can completely decolorize complex textile wastewater via oxidative destruction and coagulation of impurities, to oxidize the waste. The treated wastewater then passes through a membrane system to produce two streams: a permeate stream cosisting of relatively pure water reusable as the main water supply for dyeing and finishing and a second smaller stream consisting of a concentrated sodium sulfate brine reusable for dyebath make-up for reactive or direct dyeing after a further polishing step. Conventional methods can concentrate any resultant sludge to the desired consistency for disposal or possible recycling. 8 refs.
