Cotton knit defects can frequently be traced back to an earlier processing stage or to the fiber. Three defects related to fiber are barre, immature fiber, and metal content. Barre can be caused by numerous factors. Methods to analyze the cause include flat table examination, background light source, light source observation, atlas streak analyzer, fabric dissection, and strip and redye. Immature cotton fibers appear as white specks in fabric. The specks can be minimized by adequate fiber preparation, submercerization with a 14 percent caustic solution, and careful dye selection. The noncellulosic content of cotton ranges from 3-12 percent and can include calcium, magnesium, managanese, and iron. Dye process control parameters include liquor ratio, temperature control, pH levels, salt concentration, turnover rate, and washing. Fabric edgelines should be checked for creasing and abrasion. 3 refs.
