A review of basic principles used in dyeing nylon fibers covers processing with acid dyes, variation in dyeability, effects of temperature, heat and mechanical treatments, dyeing processes, and processing with premetalized dyes. Processing with acid dyes is important because nylon fibers contain amino groups, which are basic, and the affinity between dye and fiber is strong. Premetalized dyes have increasing applications because of excellent washfastness and lightfastness. The dyeability of nylon with acid dyes depends directly on the number of terminal amino groups present in the polymer molecule. Because nylon is a thermoplastic, the speed of dyeing depends to a large extent on the temperature. Mechancial and heat treatment used prior to dyeing also affect the dyeability of nylon.
