Basic Principles Used in Dyeing Polyester

Although a range of polyester polymers exists, the most frequently used polyester polymer is polyethylene terephthalate. Polyester has wide applications in the textile and apparel industries because of its useful and easily modified properties. The range of polyester and its use with other fibers in blends complicates the selection and optimization of dyeing processes. Unmodified polyethylene terephthalte is hydrophobic, highly crystalline, and dyeable only in disperse dye systems. A review of dyeing polyester with disperse dyes describes dyeing in lots, energy requirements, speed and temperature, recent technological developments, and future trends.
