The problems of environmental pollution from the dyeing and finishing industry are reviewed including the increase due to the introduction of microfibres. The sources of pollution are discussed for the processes of bleaching, polyester, nylon, acrylic and cellulosic dyeing together with ways of reducing the level. In the area of fabric finishing, only the effect of softeners is discussed.
