The article examines the secondary chemical reactions which accompany carbonization and suggests wasy of optimizing the process to achieve a better dyeing result. Carbonization is a process designed to remove vegetable matter from woollen fabric. The process involves impregnation with sulphuric acid and it was shown that the sulphuric acid can react with the keratin in the wool and with the products which make up the spinning lubricant. These reactions can affect the dyeing properties of the fabric. The problem can be reduced by pre-washing the fabric in perchloroethylene solvent before carbonization.
