The use of high-performance thin-layer chromatography in the analysis of dyestuffs to detect the presence of banned substances such as azo dyes and other carcinogenic substances is described. Future imports to Germany from Asian countries may require the certification of leather, textiles and other household commodities as free from specified carcinogenic amines. The compounds concerned and the analytical techniques recommended are discussed.
