Researchers pretreated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) filaments with different solvents under identical conditions to observe the effect of different solvents on such properties as swelling, moisture regain, and dyeability. Solvents with dispersion solubility parameter values similar to those of the PET and PBT filaments conferred better swelling action these included chlorobenzene, 1, 4-dioxane, and benzyl alcohol. Swelling action was more pronounced for the PET filaments. Dye uptake at the boiling point was generally higher for PBT than for PET due to its more open structure. Identical pretreatment for swelling did not change the relative dye uptake between PET and PBT. Pretreated PBT dyed at a lower temperature (80 degrees centigrade) exhibited dye uptake rates comprable with those of untreated PBT dyed at the boiling point. 16 refs.
