A Study has been carried out aimed at developing a more environmentally acceptable process for the dyeing and printing of jute fabrics with sulphur dyes. The process studied uses liquid jaggery, which was prepared by treating commercial jaggery with 0.04% citric acid for 24 hours to extract the reducing sugars, in place of sodium sulphide as the reducing agent. A plain weave jute fabric of weight 290 gms was scoured and then dyed or printed with sulphur dyes which were reduced with liquid jaggery followed by testing for fastness, weight and strength loss. It was concluded that the fabric was comparable with a conventionally dyed fabric.
