New techniques used in Santex AG dryers allow knit fabrics to shrink in a natural way, producing stable knit fabrics with a residual shrinkage potential of less than 5 percent. Residual shrinkage is determined by the method used to manufacture the fabric and the apparel item. Santex machines include low tension machines for detwisting, slitting, hydro-extracting, drying, and compacting. According to Santex engineers, most shrinkage occurs after residual moisture in the fabric falls below 35-40 percent. Santex's Santashrink dryer takes advantage of this in a two phase drying process. The first phase of the drying process operates at relatively high temperatures with high velocity air circulation to minimize drying time. The second phase occurs after residual moisture has dropped below 35-40 percent and uses reduced temperatures to allow the fabric to shrink naturally without overdrying.
