Researchers studied effluent parameters of reactive dyes at different temperatures. The study involved the measurement of dye uptake and effluent loads after dyeing cotton yarn with four reactive dyes at 60, 70, and 80 degrees centigrade. Temperatures of 60-80 degrees centigrade had no effect on dye uptake. Dyeing the samples with a 1 percent shade resulted in 80-83 percent dye uptake for the samples. All the samples offered similar washfastness properties. Although dye uptake values were constant for all the samples, effluent parameters showed higher values from dyeings at 80 degrees centigrade than those at 60 degrees centigrade. Low temperature dyeing used less eneergy than high temperature dyeing and proved to be more environmentally friendly. the chemical composition of the dyes also affected the effluent parameters. 12 refs.
