Dyestuff manufacturers have developed specialized dyes for the different requirements of wool dyeing which are differentiated by their fastness and dyeing properties. The correct application of these dye ranges guarantees the dyer a reliable, reproducible dyeing process with market-conformable fastness properties. More strictly enforced ecological requirements and the desire for more more eco-friendly production processing and textile goods that are free from hazardous substances have made it necessary to review the existing selection criteria for dyes. In the fast dyeing of wool, the decision not to use metal-containing dyes entails problems, as metal-free alternatives with the same fastness level involve application problems. This study presents a new evaluation of dyes for wool dyeing from the standpoint of the ecological and dyeing parameters and points out their possible applications.
