Researchers installed a high speed Silicon Graphics workstation with Biosyn polymer modeling software and developed models for the diffusional motion of nylon and polyethylene terephthalate noncrystalline chain segments in fibers. They used a molecular dynamics approach to model the diffusion of naphthalene (as a model dye) in hexane (as a model solvent). A large number of diffusion experiments were used to modify a method to determine the diffusion constant from dye uptake data. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching and evanescent wave spectroscopy determined the temperature dependence of the diffusion constants. Researchers attempted to form inclusion cmplexes with dyes by penetrating fibers with colorless inert materials that can be converted to dyes later. They formed an inclusion complex with a beta-cyclodextrin host from a synthesized dye.
