Fading of Reactive Dyes in Combination Shades.

A study used 15 commercially available reactive dyes to create self and binary shades on 100 percent cotton fabric. Xenon arc lamps and xenon Weather-o-meters evaluated the fbrics relative to the Blue Wool Standard and other lightfastness standards. When the total color difference between unexposed and exposed samples was 3.4 or more CIELab units, researchers confirmed their observation using a spectrophotometer. Some reactive dyes used in combination shades showed lower lightfastness ratings than the lowest values for the individual shades. Dyes for which this occurred were Procion Brilliant Blue H5G, Procion Brilliant Red H8B, Procion Brilliant Red HE3B, Reatic Red YXLRHE, Procion Yellow HE4R, Procion Brilliant Yellow H4G, and Procion Golden Yellow HR. Dyers should avoid the use of these dyes in combination shades. 8 refs.
