Selection of dyes and dyeing assistants requires an evaluation of their environmental effects. The dyeing industry needs to be concerned about environmental protection, dyehouse employee safety, and consumer health. Options include choosing products that generate smaller and less toxic amounts of effluent. Colorists may choose to replace dyes containing hazardous compounds, such as certain azo dyes and metal complex dyes. Improvements to the process require a focus on prevention. Cleaning up at the end of the process is usually difficult and is not cost effective. Failure to address the environmental effects, however, may prove to be more costly in the long term.
