Research to characterize the initial stage of cationic dyeing processes developed an experimental apparatus and technique to analyze the first several seconds of dyeing under rapid adsorption conditions. Experiments dyed a cationic dyeable acrylic fiber at 90 degrees centigrade and pH 6.4 with a 0.002 percent methylene blue solution at a 500:1 liquor ratio. The fiber remained in the 90 degree centigrade steamed atmosphere for 30 minutes prior to dyeing. Multiple optical glass fibers inserted directly into the dyebath detected the wavelength of the 668 nanometer monochromatic light beam transmittance. Results indicated that 6 percent of the dye uptake in the fibers after 2 hours of dyeing was adsorbed before 1 second. With samples of cationic dyeable polyester fiber, 9 percent was absorbed in the same period. 8 refs.
