A study evaluated a membrane filtration process for the recycling of brine from fiber reactive dyebaths. Researchers removed hydrolyzed dyes, auxiliaries, and other materials from the dyebath and the first rinse composite mixture via ultrafilation and nanofiltration and used the filtered brine to dye a second batch of fabric in monochromatic red and yellow and trichromatic gray shades. The shade, depth of color, and physical properties of the fabric processed using the recycled water compared faborably with those of fabrics dyed with fresh water. The system allowed the recovery of 90 percent of the salt used in the dyeing process and at least 90 percent of the water treated by the filtration process. Reduced purchases of salt and water and reduced sewage costs generate a payback period of just over one year for such a filtration system. 6 refs.
