Southern Company Services, Alabama Power, and the Electric Power Reseach Institute sponsored a commercial demonstration of the ozone treatment of dyebathn from two dye jet machines. An ozone treated dyebath that used reactive dyes and either caustic or soda ash as a fixing agent successfully dyed light and dark shades on cotton fabric. Recycling the salt reduced the amount off salt required for dyeing. The electrical energy required to achieve 80-90.6 percent color removal int he dyebath averaged 9 kilowatt hours per pound of ozone or 84 kilowatt hours for each treatment of an average dyebath volume of 480 gallons. Assuming a cost of $0.05 per kilowatt hour and an average decrease in the salt requirements by three bags per 1,000 gallons of treated dyebath at a savings of $14, calculations indicated that the process would generate savings of $5 per 1,000 gallons of treated dyebath. 5 refs.
