Color abatement by ozonation is a viable treatment for textile dyeing wastewater. In metallized dyes, ozonation liberates the metal from the dye ligand. The liberated metal has a high toxicity compared with the bound metal in the original dye structure. Treatment of the ozonated solutions with ion exchange or chelating resins effectively removes the free metal. Raising the pH of the ozonated solution may remove chromium (III). Organic products generated by the ozonation process may also yield toxic solutions, but these products can be removed by absorbing them on charcoal or by maximizing the ozonation time so that they are highly degraded. 5 refs.
