Experiments assessed the efficiency of beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) and its polymer (beta-CDP) in removing phthalic acid esters (PAEs) from wastewater and sediments. Fluorescence and unclear magnetic resonance spectra confirmed that PAEs were included within the beta- CD cavity. Absorption occurred in batch and column systems. The alkyl chain length of the PAEs determined the stability constants of the beta-CDP-PAE complexes. PAEs were released from beta-CDP by shaking with methanol and water. Recovered beta-CDP was reusable as an absorbent. The study indicated that the PAEs were selectively adsorbed by beta-CDP. Beta-CDP may be more effective for PAE removal than activated carbon absorbents. 34 refs.
