A joint project between the Textile Finishers Association (TFA) and the United Kingdom Department of Trade and Industry Environmental Management Options Scheme (DEMOS) recommends ranking solutions to environmental problems in the order: elimination, reduction, recycling, and treatment/disposal. DEMOS evaluated approximately 30 different methods of color removal from textile wastewater and concluded that many of the techniques required technological improvement. A majority of the techniques concentrate the color in sludge or breakdwon the color molecule. Biological effluent treatment systems offer cost effective decolorization of wastewater. They are often used in combination with physical and chemical methods, such as the Katox and Wisa methods. These combination treatment systems are referred to as sequential aerobic-anaerobic degradation processes.
