The potentiometric method analyzed the interactions between the cationic dye C.I. Basic Yellow 25 (BY25) and the cationic surfactant ceytlpyridinium chloride (CPC) in aqueous solution at pH 7 and 25 degrees centigrade. Results indicated that the surfactant CPC formed an anticooperative complex with one of the components of BY 25. Purification of the BY25 sample decreased the amount of the component that reacted with CPC. The component that reacted with CPC was not cationic. The repulsion between the same charged ions was stronger than noncoulombic Van der Waals forces and hydrophobic interactions. The binding of CPC to the component resulted in a reduction of the leveling action of the CPC in the solution of BY 25. 8 refs.
