Researchers investigating the reaction mechanisms between polycarboxylic acid (PCA) crosslinking agents and cotton used salts of inorganic phosphorus acid to catalyze the reaction. Sodium hypophosphite was the most effective catalyst. To determine the mechanisms by which the catalyst acts, an experiment heated complexes of the PCA and catalyst in the spectral beam of a microscope using a Linkham heated stage. The mechanisms for sodium phosphate catalysts entailed straightforward anhydride formation. The reaction using sodium hypophosphite catalysis was more complex. Abstract.
