The most common membrane processes used to separate solutes from solutions using the difference in hydrostatic pressure on the two sides of the membrane are microfiltration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis. Ultrafiltration is a process of separating extremely small particles or dissolved molecules from fluids. Osmosis occurs when two solutions with the same solvent but different concentrations are placed in contact through a semi-impermeable membrane. Tangential membrane filtration, especially ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis, can be used in the textile industry to purify and recover waste water. This will be increasingly improtant in the future from both ecological and economic considerations. Examples of purification procedures are presented.
