Cooperation among textile mills, machinery designers, and chemical suppliers fostered advances in finishing equipment and technology. Early washing machines used the rope design and large amounts of water. Modern, efficient open width and rope washing machines use less water to process first quality short yardage rapidly. Modern continuous dyeing machines save water, steam, and time. The advent of polyester yarns required continuous process machines that included thermosol dyeing. The use of open end yarns and surface effect slubs encouraged machinery designers to create a hot flue machine to dry the fabric slowly. Among the most innovative concepts in the industry were low wet pickup methods. The quest to minimize pollution has affected all aspects of the textile wet processing industry.
