Lyocell is a new cellulosic fiber spun from a mixture of the organic solvent N-methylmorpholine oxide (NMMO) and water. Lyocell is known as a green fiber because it is biodegradable and NMMO is a benign solvent. Although Akzo owns the patent rights to NMMO spun lyocell fiber, a number of other manufacturers produce other versions. The dyeing response of pure lyocell fibers and lyocell/wool blends were tested. Test results for pure lyocell fibers were very good with regard to colorfastness and wetfastness when using short term and low temperature dyeing cycles. Tone-in-tone effects with sufficient wetfastness and rubfastness were acheived by modifying the dyeing process and adjusting the pH.
