Kemira and a Finnish university studied the use of formic acid in the textile industry. Formic acid offers a greater acidifying and neutralizing action than acetic acid. Thus, lower quantities of formic acid achieve the same results. Studies show that formic acid treatment does not compromise fabric properties. Formic acid also offers ecological advantages. Its manufacturing processes are nonpolluting, and it produces lower biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand in wastewater than the acetic acid.
