Polymers of 1-vinyl-2methyl-imidazole are effective in inhibiting dye transfer in a variety of detergent types. Useful polymers added to granular detergents have an average molecular weight of 5,000-150,000 grams per mole. Polymers are particularly useful in detergents with densities exceeding 550 grams per liter. Terpolymers with acrylic acid are particularly effective. Methacrylic acid or vinyl sulfonic acid may substitute for acrylic acid. Detergents may contain 0.25-0.5 percent by weight of the dye transfer inhibiting polymers. Washing data for 18 different granular detergents show excellent color transfer inhibiting action for each formulation. The detergent descriptions include detailed data on detergent components.
