Waste water from fabric finishing plants contains a considerable amount of size - a substance which has to be applied to the warp yarn so that it can be woven. After weaving the size is washed out of the woven fabric and genrally ends up in the waste water where it is responsible for 40-60% of the chemical oxygen supply in the water. The paper describes various developments at the Institute for Textile and Process Technology, Denkendort (Germany) to reduce the load of size in waste water. Particular attention is devoted to yarn development, technological developments during sizing, and developments in size recycling and waste water purification.
