the design of a combinational heating system comprising a tm//0//1//0 cavity and a steam chamber for the dye fixation of textiles in the form of tow or sliver padded with appropriate dyes, is described in detail. the effects of moisture content, type of dye/textile, depth of shade and temperature distribution on the electrical characteristics of the resonant cavity are fully investigated. over the range of the process parameters examined the cavity remained tuned and matched to the rest of the circuit and exhibited a coupling efficiency of about 96. the rate of dye fixation and penetration of the dye into the fiber are compared with conventional data. economic factors relating to its adoption in a typical industrial continuous dye fixation line for yarns and tows are discussed. 18 refs
