during an astm committee on terminology (cot) meeting, one of the cot members made the comment that 'we are, after all, practicing lexicography.' the statement was quite innocent and not intended to antagonize any dye-in-the-wool terminologists on the committee, but nonetheless, it gave rise to some spirited debate. to be sure, there are terminologists who maintain that terminology work is a subcategory of lexicography, but even if we except this premise, it is still necessary to distinguish how terminology work differs from standard lexicography. in this article, the author discusses the definitions of the concepts behind terminology and lexicography, meaning versus sense, the problem of assigning foreign language equivalents to words, and systematic terminology
