industrial dyeworks are often conspicuous due to discoloration of rivers and streams into which they discharge waste materials. the adsorption process presented for the treatment of such effluent makes use of woll-carbonising waste made up of carbonised keratinic fibres and a hydrolysed vegetable material rich in ionic groups. this agro-industrial by-product showed a remarkable capacity for fixing surfactants, metallic cations and dyes. the current pilot project studied the removal of maxilon red from aqueous solutions by adsorption of the dye into the vegetable part of waste from the carbonising process. the operation was carried out continuously in a series of mixers.
