Researchers determined the optimal conditions for dyeing silk with reactive and azoic dyes and printing silk with azoic dyes. The experiment dyed mulberry and tussah silk fabrics and bleached cotton fabrics with reactive dyes. Tests measured dye uptake, lightfastness, and washfastness of the dyed fabrics. The two methods used to print azoic colors on silk fabric were naphthol padding and base printing, and naphthol printing and base padding. Results showed that dye bath pH was the critical factor for reactive dyeing. Silk fabrics and yarn dyed well with reactive dyes in slightly acidic dye baths using Procion and Remazol dyes. The dyed silk showed good lightfastness and washfastness properties and a slight lowering of tear strength. The use of naphthol printing minimizes fabric strength loss when printing with azoic dyes. 12 refs.
