CENTEXBEL, Zwijnaarde and Elf-Atochem's Chromatex polymer additive provides good compatibility and dyeability in the polypropylene matrix. Chromatex can be added to the master batch during fiber extrusion. Resulting yarns and fibers are dyeable via select disperse dyes. Other applicable dyeing processes include exhaust dyeing and continuous dyeing and printing for woven or knit fabrics or carpets. The materials require mild temperatures and short fixation times. Precured Chromatex pellets should be added at 8 percent of the conventional polypropylene solution during extrusion. The additive has a minimal effect on the mechanical properties of the fibers and yarns. Chromatex contains no heavy metals and, therefore, provides a desirable alternative to the current nickel modified dyeable polypropylene fibers.
