Researchers examining the solubility and transport aspects of supercritical fluid (SCF) extraction methods focused on disperse dyeing in supercritical carbon dioxide and developing a detector that would allow the study of SCF extraction in real time. Using four different disperse dyes, an experiment quantitatively compared SCF carbon dioxide dyeing of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) under constant temperature and pressure with high temperature aqueous dyeing of PET. Results showed that control of fluid recirculation and dye solubility in supercritical carbon dioxide had a significant effect on the SC dyeing process. SCF dyeing yielded substantially greater depth of shade per weight of dye in the fiber than did aqueous dyeing. Future research will explore the chemistry of SCFs, especially supercritical water. 16 refs.
