Sulphur dyes produce excellent dyeing swith good fastness properties. They are water-insoluble high-molecular compounds resulting from specific organic compounds merging with sulphur. A solution is formed from the dyes by reduction with sodium sulphide or sodium dithionite and caustic soda lye. This watersoluble form has an affinity for fibres. After dyeing the dyestuff is oxidised back to its original water-insoluble form. Owing to the environmental problems associated with this mode of dyeing, sulphur dyes have a bad reputation. This article describes a new range of sulphur dyes with a new dyeing process that meets the highest standards where environmental compatibility and safety regulations are concerned.
