Wet processing and swelling treatments influence the reactivity and accessibility of cotton. An experiment investigating the pore structure and accessibility of cellulosic substrates altered by chemical treatments performed scouring, slack mercerization, and enzymatic hydrolysis with cellulases on cotton yarns. Analysis of the substrates showed that moisture regain values increased after mercerization but did not change following enzymatic hydrolysis. In both scoured and mercerized samples, water retention values decreased after cellulase treatment. Equilibrium dye adsorption of Direct Blue 1 revealed differences in accessible surface area. Saturation values for the scoured control and scoured 3 hour enzymatically treated samples did not decrease significantly. However, saturation values for the 24 hour treated scoured sample and the 3 hour treated mercerized sample decreased by 25 percent and 18 percent, respectively. 9 refs.
