Experiments compared the titanium oxide photosassisted degradation of the cationic dye rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous dispersions with and without the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS). RhB degraded slowly in dispersions without DBS. The process was pH independent. DBS adsorbed strongly on the TiO(2) particles and significantly accelerated RhB degradation. Degradation rates decreased as pH increased in DBS dispersions due to variations in RhB adsorption with changes in TiO(2) particle charge. Zeta potentials of the particles showed that DBS significantly enhanced RhB adsorption, Results confirm that preadsorption on the surface of TiO(2) particles is required for efficient photodegradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. 25 refs.
