A study was carried out to compare conventional dyeing to the ultrasonics method of operation by dyeing wool fabric with two acid dyes of different molecular size, Telon Red AFG and Supranol Blue RLW, in a laboratory dyeing machine. The use of ultrasonics is discussed in detail, together with aspects of economics and energy expenditure for maximum dyeing acceleration. it is concluded that ultrasonics increase wool colouration and make it more uniform, making it possible to reduce dyeing time and/or save on textile auxiliaries. These savings are offset by the additional cost of electric power, although the ecological aspects are an advantage, particularly in view of the wealth of eco-labels. The use of ultrasonics does not pay off in every case, as the dyeing example within Telon Red AFG shows. Ultrasonic energy is of no advantage with dyes which are absorbed quickly and completely anyway.
