Hue Scale Adjustment Derived from the Munsell System

Researchers determined hue scale adjustment factors for CIELab using the Munsell system. The adjustment factors varied significantly as a function of hue angle. A formula based on the 2(o) observer color matching functions that models the chroma scale of the Munsell system was more accurate than was CIELab using the same opponent color relationships. The formula can calculate hue differences from hue angle differences, hue scale adjustment factors, and chroma. Researchers also derived the hue scale adjustment factors based on hue angle required for the Munsell system. The variability by hue angle of these factors was such that analytical hue scale adjustment functions, such as those in CMC or BFD, were inadequate. The adjustment factors were compared with those recently derived by Qiao et al. 3 refs.
