An investigation into the process underlying the subjective impressions of the fidelity of the colors of reproduced objects focused on the concept of a naturalness constraint and a framework for specification of naturalness judgments. The naturalness assessment of reproduced object colors is similar to prototypical object colors and characterized by probability density functions. Experiments revealed a high degree of inconsistency in the naturalness judgments of locally and globally processed images. Naturalness judgments varied for different object categories. Subjects were more consistent in their naturalness judgments of skin, grass, and sky reproductions than of shirt reproductions. Researchers concluded that the naturalness of the most critical object in a picture determined the naturalness of the entire picture. Researchers defined a naturalness index for predicting the perceived naturalness of color reproductions of real life scenes. 48 refs.
