The CIELab Space or L*a*b standard is the most widely accepted equation for color evaluation. It is a three axis system comprising lightness (L*), the amount of red or green (a*), and the amount of blue or yellow (b*). L*, a*, and b* values derive directly from the tristimulus values via a series of standard equations. However, the standard CIELab system does not correspond to color descriptions that correlate to visual assessment because visual perception is based on saturation and hue rather than red/green or blue/yellow content. The CIELab LCH method correlates the differences between visual and CIELab methods by accounting for chroma and hue angle values. The Color Measurement Committee of the Society of Dyers and Colorists has also developed modification to the CIELab system to accommodate differences with visual systems.
