The impact of mercerizing, bleaching and desizing in the cotton industry on the environment is evaluated. Water and energy conservation are discussed. The ecological threat posed by dyeing and printing processes is assessed. The effectiveness of methods of treating effluents (both liquid and gaseous) is considered.
