The dyeing and printing industries in South India use mostly manual techniques. Silk, cotton, and viscose yarn and some fabrics are dyed. Hank dyeing yarn with direct and/or vat dyes for weaving sarees on handlooms is a common practice. Handwoven fabric for sarees are printed with reactive dyes or pigments. Direct dyes with good fastness to light and washing are commonly used to dye sarees. The dyeing is performed manually to produce fabrics for export. The famous silk Pochampalli sarees from Andhra Pradesh are made with a modified tie dye technique.
