The Hong Kong Institute of Biotechnology (HKIB) has announced the development of a biodegradation technology for indigo dyes and other dyes commonly used in the textile industry. HKIB has isolated several microbial strains capable of degrading indogo and its carmine derivative. One of the microorganisms, Stain H-12, can decompose 1.0 gram of indigo per liter per day, yielding non-toxic degradation products. The HKIB products are gentler, more easily controlled, and less polluting than stone-washing. HKIB has also announced the isolation of a set of microorganisms that can decompose insoluble sulfur black dyes into water soluble products.
