Two factors spur the development of automatic requlatory systems for textile dyeing and finishing: advances in low-cost computer-controlled microprocessors and greater awareness of the risks associated with the handling of dyes, pastes, colorants, and auxiliaries. Software must be standardized and processing parameters catalogued for various dyeing methods (batch, continuous), fabric preparation methods (enzyme desizing, caustic scouring, peroxide bleaching), printing (paste dispensing), and finishing (chemical feed rates). The overall automation of fabric-batch preparation, including volumetric dosing of additive solutions by metered or peristaltic pumping and the gravimetric dosing of liquids, are examined. 32 refs.
