Optimal procedures are developed for preventing problems frequently encountered during continuous dyeing cotton and polyester/cotton fabrics with vat and disperse/vat dyes. Common operating problems include bad side-center-side shading, spotting, inconsistency of shade within a dye lot, and poor repeatability of shade from one production run to the next. Proper dye-mixing, drying, and steaming routines are presented, and the merits of the Kuster-type dye padder are discussed. Time/temperature parameters for infrared pre-drying, hot-flue drying, and the Thermosol process are listed. 3 refs.
