Due to fashion trends, jeans manufacturers have had to use increasingly sophisticated treatments in such finishing procedures as acid-washing, stone-washing, and white-washing. These processes yield contaminants that have forced manufacturers to re-evaluate and re-design their wastewater treatment systems. Some pollutants found in the water from jeans plants are heavy metals, BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) and COD(chemical oxygen demand) reactants, dyes, oils, and grease. These pollutants cause problems for publicly owned treatment works because they tend to cause bacterial growth. Heavy metals are toxic even in minute concentrations. mechanical treatments and a flow-schematic for wastewater system are presented.
