The dyeing industry in southern India can be divided into four categories: fabric dyeing and printing, yarn dyeing, hosiery dyeing and printing, and composite textile mills. Fabric dyeing and printing houses typically process cotton and cotton blends with viscose. A small number of firms specialize in dyeing and printing polyester and polyester/cotton blends. Yarn dyeing is the largest and least modernized segment of the textile processing industry of southern India. Yarns are dyed in hank form with vat dyes. Hosiery dyeing and printing, catering mostly to the export market, takes place almost exclusively in Tirupur, Tamilnadu. Composite textile mills dye or print their own cloth, but this is a relatively small segment of the wet-finishing industry of the region.
