Activities in small scale dyeing and printing industries in South India are reviewed. Basic and reactive dyes are used to dye narrow fabrics woven from viscose. Handweavers practice ikat, a resist dyeing technique, in the production of Pochampally sarees in silk and cotton. Various dyes, including reactive, direct, and metal complex dyes, are used in ikat. Techniques for preparing and dyeing silk and cotton are described. Sulfur black dyeing is commonly used in South India to dye fast jet black shades on cotton yarn.
